  • money

  • living room

Shopping for living room furniture can be a daunting task. There are so many styles available on the market today, and not all of them will compliment the layout of your living space.

If you are considering a furniture upgrade in your current living room, or you are purchasing furniture for your living space for the first time, there are a few helpful tips that will guide you through the process. If you are on a budget, then strategize which pieces of furniture are the most important to you, and purchase those first. That way, you can build on your living room décor as time goes on without feeling like you are missing a vital piece of furniture.

Step One: Stage Your Living Area

The term "staging" is a relatively new word that is used by home fashion designers to describe the planning and layout for your living space. If you don't stage your living room before your purchase your furniture, you might wind up with pieces that are too big or too small for your space. In addition, it is imperative that the right number of items is purchased to adequately furnish your living space, or your room might wind up looking too empty or too cluttered. In order to stage the room appropriately, use some ribbon or painters' tape to mark off the area where you would like to put a couch, table, loveseat etc. You can also use pillows and blankets to help mark off these areas. Now, stand in a corner of your room and carefully observe the layout. Is there too much open floor space left? Is there adequate room to walk around without bumping into the marked off areas? Unless you have an exceptionally large living room, your living space can probably only handle three to five pieces of furniture.

Step Two: Go Neutral with Large Pieces of Furniture

All too often, people choose pieces of furniture that have busy designs or complicated fabric patterns only to wish they had chosen differently. There is absolutely nothing wrong with adding some flavor and zest to a living space. However, the most practical way to accomplish this is to embellish with accessories, not with the major pieces of furniture. Fashion changes rapidly, so you want to choose basic pieces of furniture for your living space that will not limit your ability to change with the times. In addition, you might want to avoid pieces of furniture that have an overly powerful and dramatic style. For example, couches and tables that have an abundance of hardware can seem dramatic, but can also detract from the overall glamour of the room. Stick with neutral colors, patterns, and hardware so your accessorizing options will be limitless. In addition, stick with neutral fabrics, including leather, so you will have a basic medium to work with.

Step Three: Quality is More Important than Quantity

Furniture is expensive, but it can be long-lasting. If you choose brands and furniture items that are known for having a good reputation, then you might be able to use them for a decade or more without having to worry about replacement costs. That doesn't mean that you have to go to expensive furniture dealers! Some high quality pieces of furniture for your living space can be found at furniture outlets and discount stores. Even stores like Big Lots can carry reputable and high quality pieces of furniture. If you are trying to stay on a budget, purchase a high quality couch first. Your living room will look incomplete without this basic and critical piece of furniture.

If you stage your area, stick with neutral pieces of furniture, and buy quality pieces, your living room will quickly become your favorite room in the house.
