How to Decorate Your Living Room With Two Sofas

When arranging seating for a formal living room, keep in mind the convenience of carrying on a conversation. Lay out a furniture arrangement to accommodate a group setting and also allow for easy traffic flow. Depending on the size of the room there can be more than one grouping of furniture, and the room can still be comfortable and inviting. Informal living rooms can be more focused toward activities that the family enjoys in the room.

Things You'll Need

  • Accent pillows
  • Coffee table
  • Ottoman
  • Area rug
  • End table

Identical Sofas
Place two identical sofas facing each other. Select similar accent pillows for the sofas. Pillows need not be a mirror image of the ones on the sofa they are facing.

Lay an area rug between the sofas that is the length of the sofas. Select a width for the rug that accommodates a coffee table or an ottoman. Allow for an adequate foot path between the table and the sofas.

Create a "U" arrangement to include a focal point of the room, such as a fireplace or window. Close off one end of the sofas with a pair of chairs and leave the opposite end open to show off the fireplace or window.

Short and Long Sofas
Create an "L" shaped seating arrangement when two sofas are not identical in size, such as three-cushioned and two-cushioned sofas. Connect the sofas with an end table and use a table lamp that can be shared for either sofa. Face the large sofa in the direction of the room's focal point.

Separate a short and long sofa to make two conversation areas in a large room. Define the spaces with two area rugs. Add a chair on each side of the short sofa to form a "U" seating area. Include accents pillows that complement both sofas to tie the two areas together.

Set the long and short sofas facing each other. Balance the short sofa with a chair and small end table. Use the end table to display small room accessories rather than a lamp. Tall items or a lamp would act as a divider and be awkward for conversation.
