How to Mix Old & Modern Furniture

To some, mixing old furniture with contemporary pieces might seem like a pointless, unnecessary headache. But when done with thought and care, such a mix of periods can give a room a distinct, multi-faceted look. While there are no hard-and-fast rules, there are a few guidelines to keep in mind. Too much mixing creates a cluttered, chaotic, distracting space. But, if you believe something looks good, it most likely does.

Things You'll Need

  • Antique Furniture
  • Antique Accent Pieces
  • Contemporary Furniture
  • Contemporary Accent Pieces

Determine whether you want a room of antique furniture with modern accents or a contemporary room with intermittent antique pieces or accessories. This is a necessary decision as you don't want it to seem like the two design periods are at war. Instead, you want the two decors to gracefully complement each other.

Determine the motif of fusion. You need to have an element present in all of your pieces that unites the room. This could be a color that is present to some extent in every period, a type of shade of wood, or a visual theme, like the ocean.

Experiment with opposites. Consider pairing an antique or rustic desk with a sleek, modern chair, or combining a vintage armchair with a modern light fixture.

Combine similar elements. Find antique and contemporary furniture that echo each other and pair them together. For example, many antique mirrors feature pristine lines; such a mirror could be put above a slick, minimalist dresser.
